Good Morning Ladybirds!


Can you believe it's the end of the week already Ladybirds? Have fun with today's activities and then enjoy the weekend. Fingers crossed the sun comes out again!

(Note for Parents/ Carers of children coming back to school on the 8th June- please do share the 'Transition Back to School' booklet with your child to help them become a little familiar with the new routines that we will need to put in place on their return. Find the link on the menu on the right.)

     Today's handwriting letters: ch

Today we will use the digraph 'ch' in our handwriting. The Jolly Phonics action for 'ch' is as follows.


Watch the letters being formed in the Sky Writer tool from by clicking on the letters above (select 'cursive' to see how to make the lead in and lead out lines). Remember as always to start with your pencil on the line.

Now have a go at copying the 'ch' words below. Look carefully at the size of your small letters. Try to keep them the same size. 


     Mental maths challenge:

Have some fun with the geo boards today. Click on my picture below to be taken to the math learning centre website. Select different coloured elastic bands and place them on the board to create some fabulous pictures. You can choose different shaped or sized boards by selecting from the menu at the bottom.

Use the boards to explore and talk about any shapes you have used. I used an octagon when creating my smiley face- can you spot it? How many sides does an octagon have? Are the sides straight or curved? 

Have fun!



Friday is fun-time phonics so you get to choose which games you play and which sounds you want to work on but here are a reminder of a few games or websites you may wish to visit:  (lot's of games including Tell a T-Rex) (games include Phonics Frog) (games include Dragon's den)  

Remember to go through all the sounds and tricky words you have been learning so far. At the bottom of the page you will find the Phase 4 tricky words for those children who are confident reading and writing their Phase 3 words. Have you been reading daily too Ladybirds? Good Morning Ladybirds!


Another busy day for us Ladybirds in our new topic of 'Knight School'. What will you choose from our Home Learning grid today? If you are feeling a little sleepy why not try something that will get you moving and wake you up a little?

Come on Knights... let's get going!

   Today's handwriting letters: qu

Did you enjoy the invisible writing yesterday Ladybirds? We have now practised all of our letter families so this term we are going to begin using our Phase 3 sounds in our handwriting practice and focus on the size of our letters. We will continue to practise our number formation too so look out for our number knockout game next week. 

Today's letters make the digraph 'qu'. As usual you can watch the letters being made with the Sky Writer tool from by clicking on the link below.

When you have practised writing the letters have a go at copying the following 'qu' words. Take care to form each letter correctly and try hard to keep each small letter the same size, keep tall letters tall and make sure any tails hang down under the line. Why not challenge your grown-ups to try the handwriting letters - we bet they find it tricky too!


    Mental maths challenge:

Today's challenge is a counting in 10s challenge. Join in with the count by clicking on the link below.

Now see if you can remember the order with a jumping game.

Make yourself a jumping arena. You could draw lots of circles with chalk outside or make an indoor version!

Write the numbers 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, 90, 100 in the different circles. Make it random!

Now start on 10 and get jumping. Jump in order all the way to 100. Can you jump back down from 100 to 0?


Practise your sounds and tricky words as usual Ladybirds then try out the activity below.

Our sound of the week is the trigraph 'ure' as in pure.

Click on the attachment at the bottom of the page to find today's activity - Thursday's phonic activity.

Look at the pictures and say the word. Stretch out each word so that you can hear all the sounds. Can you hear the 'ure' sound? Write the sounds you hear to spell each word. There is also an alternative 'oo' spelling activity for those children working through the earlier Phase 3 sounds. The action for 'oo' to peep out from behind your hands as if you are the cuckoo coming out from a cuckoo clock "oo - oo".

Next try out the sentence activity. "What happens next?" You will find it in the same attachment.

Decide what will happen and write a sentence to tell everyone. Remember to add a capital letter and full stop and read your sentence to check it makes sense. (You can choose a silly idea though!)

Good Morning Ladybirds!


Wow! We have only been back a couple of days and already in the Home Learning Gallery we can see you are busy, busy, busy. We can see how much you are going to enjoy our new topic Ladybirds. What a fabulous castle picture and we have a knight all ready for action this term- you are doing a great job defending off that ferocious dragon! We can see you are enjoying the sunny weather, spending lots of time in the garden and even taking your learning out there too. We love the pasta maths. Let's hope the sun keeps shining!

I promised you a sneaky spy day today Ladybirds so we will need to be incognito- maybe put on a hat or some dark sunglasses. No-one must know it's you!


If no-one's looking, let's get spying!

      Today's handwriting: spy writing

Today try out some 'invisible' writing. There are a couple of ways to try it. 

1. Simply write with a white wax candle. If you write on white paper, the wax will not show so no-one will be able to see what you have done until you reveal it by painting over the top with some runny paint.

2. Another way to make a secret message is to mix the juice of a lemon with a few drops of water. Dip the end of a cotton bud into the mixture and get writing! Leave until the paper is dry and your writing has turned invisible. The message will not be revealed until you hold the paper near a heat source such as a lamp.

All you need to do now is decide what you will write. Whatever you choose try to remember to use the beautiful handwriting you have been practising! If it works well we'd love to see your pictures!

     Mental maths challenge:

Spies, there is a code to be cracked in today's maths challenge.

There are some secret spy letters that you need to read but they have been hidden in the safe. Can you work out the number code needed to open the safe?

There are 4 clues to help you work out the 4 numbers. Once you have the numbers order them from the smallest to greatest. Write the code down then check with the answer at the bottom of the page. Did you get it right? If you did the secret spy letters are yours!

Clue 1:   This number is the same as double 3.
Clue 2:    This number is the answer to: 4 + 2 + 2 - 1
Clue 3:   This number is the same as the number of sides on a pentagon.
Clue 4: This number is the same as the number of buttons on the spy's coat.

Now you know the 4 numbers don't forget to order them from smallest to greatest (biggest).

Check if you cracked the code and opened the safe! (answer at the bottom of the page)


Practise your sounds and tricky words as always Ladybirds. If you have a torch and somewhere dark to explore (you could create a little dark den by draping blankets over a chair or table) you could look for tricky words by torch light. Ask a grown up to write down your tricky words and hide it in your dark den. Set yourself a time to spot and read as many words as you can using your torch!

Alternatively, if you have a magnifying glass why not ask your grown-ups to make some teeny-tiny tricky word cards for you to find around the house and read.

Today's phonic challenge is another chance for you to use those super spy skills. The secret letters from the safe are ready for you to read (find them in the attachment at the bottom of the page) but they don't make sense! Can you un-jumble the words and rearrange them to work out what the letters should say? Good luck in your mission spies!

Parents/ Carers: There are two versions of this activity. The first uses tricky words and many digraphs and trigraphs. The second has fewer digraphs and some simpler words to blend.

Good Morning Ladybirds!


Happy Tuesday Ladybirds! Talking of being happy- have any of you taken pictures of things that make you smile yet? It's one of our Home Learning challenges this week. Mrs Chapman took this picture which made her smile- a strawberry growing in my garden that is ready to eat. Yum!

What is making you happy today? The sun shining? Pancakes for breakfast? Snuggles with your pet? We are looking forward to seeing your photos. They may make us smile too - we know just how infectious smiles can be!

Ready for today's challenges? Let's get busy....


   Today's handwriting letters: e, s, u

Our final letters don't belong to any of our letter families but you do need to start with your pencil on the line when writing them. Watch how they are formed in the Sky Writer tool from below then have a go at writing your own.


Now see if you can match the lower case letters you have written to the capital letters below.


        Mental maths challenge:

Do you remember our learning on 'halves'? Why not try this drawing challenge. Look at the picture below. If you look carefully you will see it is not a whole picture but half a picture. Can you tell what it is?

Your challenge is to try to draw the other half to make the picture whole again. Each half should look the same. Use the grid squares to help you to work out where each part of the owl should go. Good luck!

You can print off the picture from the attachment at the bottom of the page- Tuesday's maths challenge  - or if you don't have a printer ask a grown-up to make you a half picture for you to complete. 

How did you get on? Was it easy or a little tricky? Well done if you didn't give up.

There is an alternative challenge- reading words with the 'ng' digraph for those children working through the earlier Phase 3 sounds. The action for this sound is to pretend you are a strong man or lady lifting up a heavy weight and say "nnnnggggggg" as you lift the weight high.

Good Morning Ladybirds!


Welcome back to Home School Ladybirds! We hope you had a fabulous holiday and got up to lots of fun and exciting adventures. It's our final term - but don't be sad - because in our new topic we are going discover all about castles and castle life from long ago.

Welcome to....

We know some of you will be coming back to school next week and some of you will continue your learning at home. Wherever you are, and whoever you are with, we will all be trying out the same activities from the Home Learning Grid below. Please keep sending in the fabulous pictures of all the things you get up to at home to for us to put on the home learning gallery and Mrs Chapman will upload pictures here to share with you some of the things we do at school. 

By the way...what a fabulous under the sea diorama we spotted in the gallery. It looks like your sea creatures really are swimming in their watery habitat!

One of the activities on this week's grid is to share a 'Mike the Knight' story. Can you name the characters in the stories? Which character would you like to be? Why?

As usual Ladybirds, create your timetable so you can see when you will be doing your school activities and challenges and when you will have some playtime and family time. What will your timetable look like today?

Just like Mike the Knight this term you are going to be 'Knight's in Training' and there will be lots to learn so... let's be a knight and "Do it right!"

     Today's handwriting letters:  zig-zag family

Our zig-zag letters: v, w, x, z are letters that are made of straight lines. Remember, start with your pencil on the line and check you have got your 'pinchy pen' grip!

(don't forget to choose 'cursive' to see how to make the lead in and lead out lines)

The 'x' on Sky Writer is formed in a different way. The way we form it at All Souls' is to begin as if you were writing a 'v'. "Go up to the top then 'zig down'. Now take your pencil off and move it back along the line then 'zag up to the top' and off".

Try it with the Writing Repeater tool from ict-games by clicking on the letters below.

Do you know what the capital letter for each of our zig-zag letters looks like? Can you match the small letters you have written to the correct capital letter below?


       Mental maths challenge:

Today's challenge is a comparing one. Look at the dragons pictured below then see if you can answer the questions. This is a chance to practise your 'maths talk' to explain your thinking.

How many dragons are breathing fire?

How many dragons have horns?

Are there more dragons with yellow tummies or more dragons with green tummies? How do you know?

Are there fewer dragons with green wings or fewer dragons with orange wings? How do you know?

Mrs Chapman says, "If the blue dragons flew away. There would be 4 dragons left." Is she right? Can you explain why?



This week's sound is a tricky one. It's the trigraph 'ure' as in 'pure'.

Remember a trigraph means "3 letters, 1 sound".
