Good Morning Ladybirds!

   

Did you hear the thunder yesterday Ladybirds? What a wet start to July! In school yesterday we used the part, part whole model to explore halving different numbers then had a go at preparing the vegetables to make our pottage- we peeled and chopped. Have a look at the photos. Do you think we enjoyed our taste test?

Ok Ladybirds. We know by now Friday is a fun day for learning so lets try out a few games in our challenges today...

    Handwriting challenge:

Long ago people would have written not with pencils but with a special type of pen called a 'quill'. They are made from a bird's feather. The end of the feather was cut to form a point (the nib) then dipped in ink ready to write.

     

Do you have a feather you could turn into a quill pen? You may have some in your making box. Maybe you have found a feather on a walk- if you are going to use a found feather please ask a grown-up to wash it for you first and cut a point at the end.

Now you need some 'ink'. Try watering down some paint to use as your ink. Can you write your name remembering your beautiful handwriting letters?

     Mental maths challenge:

Have some fun with the geoboards today Ladybirds. You can find a great one on the Math Learning Centre site. Just click on the picture below. What pictures can you make with the elastic bands? The challenge is to create a castle!

    Phonics:

After going through all your sounds and tricky words today Ladybirds have fun playing your favourite phonics games.

You could visit the Phonics Play site and play Buried Treasure- don't forget to click on Phase 4 now to practise blending with those intial and final clusters.

You could visit the Phonics Bloom site and play Alien Escape to practise your spelling.

or why not Phonics Frog? Click 'revise all' to practise blending words with all the Phase 3 sounds.

Good Morning Ladybirds!

      

How are you feeling today Ladybirds? Are you full of energy and raring to go or still a little sleepy? Don't forget to try out the wake and shake activities on the Home Learning Grid. They are great for both waking you up and for getting rid of some of that energy so that you are ready for today's challenges.

Yesterday in school we created our own stories using the Story Plan. We all worked so hard that we wanted to share our work with you. Click on the link at the bottom of the page to find our writing- Ladybird's stories. We were very proud of what we did...

Today we are using our kitchen skills to become medieval cooks. We will be helping to prepare a simple soup called Pottage. We hope it will be yummy as when it is cooked we are going to taste test it! You can join in too by following the guide on the Home Learning Grid.

     Handwriting letters: air

We have 3 letters to practise today that make up the trigraph 'air' as in 'chair'.

Watch the little red jet in the Sky Writer tool form each shape before having a go yourself.

Now try writing these 'air' words in your beautiful handwriting...

 

      Mental maths challenge:

Today is a symmetry challenge. Do you remember what the word 'symmetry' means?

Now see if you can match the correct pattern in the following game from the Top Marks site. Can you make the patterns symmetrical?

   Phonics: or

Today's sound is the digraph 'or' as in 'fork'. The Jolly Phonics action for this sound is as follows...

         

Click on the links above to go to the BBC Bitesize and Mister Teach's Phonics sites where you can hear the digraph and practise blending words with the 'or' sound in them.

Good Morning Ladybirds!

     

Goodness me Ladybirds we have gone from a very windy day to a very wet day! What will the weather be like today I wonder? 

Yesterday in school we had fun trying out some different entertainments ready for our banquet.

We listened to some medieval music and tried out the circle dance from the Home Learning Grid- it got quite fast! We also tried out some juggling which was a little tricky but we will keep practising.

Time for today's challenges...

   Handwriting:

It's time for another round of number knockout Ladybirds. Remember the rules of the game;

1. Find something interesting to write your numbers with- it doesn't have to be a pencil!

2. When you are ready ask a grown-up to call out a number for you to write.

If you write the number correctly you are still in the game. If you are still in after 5 rounds you are a number knockout champion!

Why not try writing your numbers beyond 20!

 

    Mental maths challenge:

Let's try out our adding skills today. Do you remember how to count on by putting a number in your head?

Watch this YouTube clip below to remind you how we don't need to count on from 1 each time.

Now try counting on for yourself. You could use 2 dice like in the video or play one of your favourite adding games on the internet. Does counting on make counting quicker?

     

     Phonics:

In our phonics challenge today we are not going to look at our Phase 3 digraphs or trigraphs but practise blending words with 'initial consonant clusters' such as 'br' or 'cl'. These make words a little bit longer so you will have more sounds to blend to read the words. It can be tricky!

Play the Buried Treasure game from Phonics Play to try out your blending skills.

Now try the snakes and ladders blending game from the Twinkl site. You will find a larger and printable version at the bottom of the page.

Look out for these clusters in your reading books. Don't forget to share a book each day from OxfordOwl as well as practising all your sounds and tricky words.

Good Morning Ladybirds!

       

It was a little windy yesterday wasn't it Ladybirds! We hope you didn't get blown away if you ventured outdoors. We made a good start with our new learning grid at school yesterday. We shared some cookies (and ate some too- yum!) and wrote our invitations for our banquet this week. We even used a wax seal to make our invitations look really royal. Can you see the pattern the stamp makes in the wax?

As it was very blustery in the afternoon lots of us chose to make kites. It was fun watching them get blown about by the wind!

What will you be doing today Ladybirds? At school we will be testing out our 'jestering' skills.   

Have fun with whatever you choose!

   Handwriting letters: ear

There are 3 letters to practise today Ladybirds. Together they make the trigraph 'ear' as in 'spear'.

Watch the little red jet form each letter if you are still a little unsure how to do it then have a go yourself. Are you trying to make sure that each letter is the same size?

Now try writing the following 'ear' words in your beautiful handwriting...

 

    Mental maths challenge:

Today's challenge is a measuring one. Can you measure the length of different things around the room? When we have measured in school before we used cubes but today we will need a ruler to help us measure in centimetres or 'cms'.

Ask a grown-up to help show you how to use a ruler to measure from one end of an object to the other. Top tip: Make sure you start measuring from the '0' on your ruler!

This game from the Top Marks site can help you practise your measuring skills. Click on the picture to go to the site. Choose Level 1.

 

    Phonics: ar

Remember to practise all the sounds and tricky words we have learned so far Ladybirds. Our digraph today is the sound 'ar' as in 'car'. The Jolly Phonics action for this sound is as follows...

Good Morning Ladybirds!

     

Happy Monday Ladybirds! We hope you had a fantastic weekend or did you get caught in the rain showers like Mrs Chapman did? This week in Knight School we will be having a celebration in the castle. The home learning activities will help you join in with the festivities too; from writing invitations, trying out some juggling, story telling and dancing for entertainment and whipping up some scrumptious Medieval food for everyone to eat. It is going to be fun! You will find the learning grid at the bottom of the page.

It's a good thing we finished decorating our goblets in school last week. Now we really are ready to entertain our guests!

 

As always Ladybirds try to do one or two learning grid activities each day along with the handwriting, mental maths and phonics challenges.

   Handwriting letters: oi

Our letters today make up the digraph 'oi' as in 'coin'. Can you remember how to form each letter? If you need to, watch the red jet in the Sky Writer tool from ict-games before having a go yourself. Make sure you are holding your pencil with a 'pinchy pen' grip and start each letter on the line.

Now try writing the following 'oi' words...

As always we will start the week with a counting challenge. Today it is counting in 2s.

Can you remember how to count in 2s? Watch the YouTube clip below (Mr R's Songs for Teaching- Count By 2) to help you.

Look carefully at the pattern of numbers as we count in 2s to 30. What do you notice? Can you see how the 'ones' digit always ends in 0, 2, 4, 6 or 8?

Fill in your own 'counting in 2s' caterpillar to see the pattern for yourself. You will find a printable version at the bottom of the page.

For a final challenge....If we counted in 2s from the number 2, which of the following numbers would we NOT say? Can you explain how you know?

     Phonics: oo

Our digraph today makes two sounds; the short sound 'oo' as in 'book' and the long sound 'oo' as in 'moon'. The Jolly Phonics action for this digraph is as follows...

Note to parents/ carers: If you have a printer, print off the version at the bottom of the page then cut out the pictures and jumble them up. Ask your child to sort and stick the pictures onto the correct frame then encourage them to write a label for each word using the sounds they hear. If you don't have a printer you could make your own cards or go on a long and short 'oo' treasure hunt around the house and garden. How many objects can you find with the 'oo' sound?
